Gold Prospecting & Fossicking


In Victoria, a prospector or fossicker requires a Miner’s Right which is a permit to prospect for minerals on unreserved Crown Land or private land where the permission of the landowner has been granted.


A Victorian Miners Right is valid for 2 years and can be purchased for $29.20 from the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre. For more information visit the Department of Primary Industries

GEMSTONES

Stoneage Gems is located 8km from Beechworth on the Beechworth Chiltern Road, just look out for the sign. Come and see the interesting hobby collection of over 60 years. Collection includes petrified wood, petrified fern, malachite, minerals, gem stones, opals, crystals, and local stones such as smokey quartz crystal, crystal, garnets & agates. Some made into jewellery.

 

GOLD PANNING

Sebastopol Park offers you the opportunity: To view Kelly’s cave. Stand where Joe Byrne lived. Walk along the water race where Ned & Joe eluded the Police. Gold pan in the creek (when the creek is flowing). View coins & relics found with a metal detector at Sebastopol Park and Byrne’s hut site. History etc. included in price of Devonshire tea or lunch.
